I started 5/21/2012 in Fastenal's K-hub Receiving Department. I was hired in as a Team Lead. This job has been a fun extension of my material handling experience. I have explored new depths of our software suite, and begun attending my Outlook throughout the day. I am raising and lowering most of the freight into and out of our department using stand-up lifts. Friday I learned how the bay doors have routing i.d.'s and freight is staged around and above the bay that they will be loaded into.
This job is fun and challenging. I am exploring what it means to be a leader, and having very proactive, successful conversations with my partner about being our best selves and growing in the workplace.
I have come to a realization. It's one of those words I could have given a dictionary definition of since I was in elementary school, yet it hit me like a truck when I got the meaning; Accountability.
I have found that it is the Golden Key that unlocks the Golden Lock of effectiveness.
As I strive to learn more about accountability through practice, I find deeper truths. Bless this Journey. I love it.
Starting with my education at Northwest Renewable Energy Institute, and into my career,I will be posting things of interest to me.

Fastenal career in forward motion
I began working at Fastenal in Lakewood, WA 5/31/11.
I was hired into the packaging dept. After about 2 weeks I was moved to material handling where I could use my inventory skills.
As a material handler, I stocked carton-flow racks by hand from a pass-through rack. I was taught by excellent staff. I have kept a positive attitude. I enjoy my career. I have also become very lean and fit physically which is a nice side-benefit.
After 2 months or so, I received forklift training and learned how to use two kinds of forklifts. I have been driving ever since.
Using a restock report and a lift I carry pallets of product from overstock to the carton-flow rack. I organize and replenish pass-through racks. This job is also very physical.
My early education and career in GM's parts system has made me an excellent material handler. I have enjoyed my time at Fastenal. I am thriving doing this work.
I am currently training new hires into the material handling department. It takes a lot of work for a starting salary job, but everyone I have met who thrived there has been promoted. I believe Fastenal is onto something.
